overview
A personal challenge: could I make a broadcast-quality ad on free daily AI credits and my evenings? In two weeks, I generated shots in Veo 3, refined prompts in ChatGPT and finished in After Effects and Premiere.
I’ve since rebuilt it scene for scene with newer tools: stills in Nano Banana, motion in Veo 3.1, with real Nike shoes in every shot and the original’s AI tells designed out. Same brief, a clear measure of how far the tech has moved.
approach
ChatGPT was great for the initial ideation of the original project. With some back-and-forth prompting I generated a comprehensive shot list full of detailed visuals, then picked the shots I liked and translated them into AI video with Veo 3.
For the rebuild, the shot list already existed, so the job was matching it. I broke the original down scene by scene, noting camera moves, speed and framing. Each shot started as a still in Nano Banana, built from real Nike product references, so the shoes, light and colour were locked in before any motion. Those stills then became the first frames, and for bigger camera moves the last frames too, in Veo 3.1. Most of the work was in the iteration, checking each shot against the AI tells of the original: heavy colour casts, garbled text and over-smooth skin.
